Highly anticipated Rai 1 production Sopravvissuti (Survivors) will be streaming this fall. The drama narrates the disappearance of a vessel caught in a massive storm and its mysterious and inexplicable re-appearance one year later. Seven members of the original twelve crew survived the incident, and an ominous secret links them. Brazilian actress Desiree Poppers plays Lara, one of the survivors. Desiree is relatively new to the Italian movie scene, appearing in 2018 in Restiamo Amici (Let’s Be Friends) by director Antonello Grimaldi. Yet she captured the hearts of many Italians with her natural beauty and wits.

In this interview, Desiree lays bare the hardships and gratifications of being an actress, what motivates her, and her fight for women’s rights.

You play Lara in the upcoming mystery Sopravvissuti (Survivors). What can you tell us about the highly anticipated show?

The story is about twelve passengers who encountered a violent storm on a sailing boat, the Arianna. The ship disappears from radar and loses contact with land. A year later, the shipwreck is found with seven survivors. Each episode follows the survivors' return, alternating with the terrible time spent trying to survive.

Sopravvissuti was slated for release last year and got pushed to Fall this year. The waiting must be hard. What are you most excited for the viewers to see?

The wait has been gruesome torture! As artists, some of us suffer from an underlying fear of not being good enough—the wait of not knowing if I did a good job, not knowing if I gave life to that beautifully strong yet at the same time vulnerable young woman. And you know what? It feels good to be like that, to question my art. I’m perfectionistic, so the belief that it has to be perfect keeps me endlessly spinning the wheels to become a better artist. Regarding the plot, I like how “survivors" makes you ask yourself, what would you do if in survival mode? Would your ethics and beliefs vanish for the sake of life? It’s incredible what human beings are capable of when staying alive is the only thing that matters.

How was working with the cast of Sopravvissuti?

The cast is formidable; I was lucky to get the chance to work with such a talented team. I had a lot to learn and grow during the entire shooting time.

Do you have any memorable stories while being on the set of Sopravvissuti?

When I was just a baby, I drowned, so let’s say filming in a boat and having to shoot underwater scenes was a lot about overcoming past traumas. People think acting is fun and exciting, but actors have their scars and demons to deal with.

What is the hardest thing about being an actor?

Total Look TOD’S.

Usually, the general belief is that our life is about shiny dresses, glamour, and events. The truth is that actors are constantly judged, scrutinized, and criticized. Not to mention the uncertainty and hard work involved in being an artist. People usually see the top of the iceberg, but deep down, there are a lot of sleepless nights, resilience, and determination—thousands of auditions before you get a role. But the most challenging parts are also the most rewarding. Artists know that their success is a marathon and not a sprint.

What is the craziest thing to ever happen to you while on an audition?

Funny and lucky story. There are about three or four places to go to for an audition. One day, I was called to audition for a tv commercial; in a rush and without checking the studio address, I drove to the wrong studio! I felt so ashamed because they were casting only male roles that day, not for a commercial but a tv show. Eventually, everybody spotted I was in the wrong place, and so did the casting director. She walked to me, introduced herself, and asked me to return a week later. Long story short, I got the part! That’s just how wonderful and unpredictable an actor’s life can be.

What do you like most about acting and producing?

Often we hear that creativity is intelligence having fun. I agree with that. I believe that creativity is like a muscle, it can be developed, but most of all, it has to be cultivated. I love taking risks; I am always eager and excited to take on a new project with high-risk potential. As an actor, you never know whether your character will get killed off or the project you’re producing will be rejected, but you have to make the most of it. That’s why I prefer to accept complex parts; I always try to do things that may challenge the boundary of ordinary thinking.

How do you prepare for a role mentally and physically?

There isn't a perfect recipe for me. I get immediately curious about who I am going to play: extensive research is an excellent start. To be effective, you have to be curious about the subject. And if you're interested in something, you automatically want to go deeper and deeper and know more. I like to think that every character is like a new "magic box;" it starts empty, and you have to fill it up with thoughts, knowledge, emotions, memories, and anything you want to throw in that precious box. It's a long process, but the more you create and put in that box, the more material you'll have available to reach out to when the time comes.

What is the one thing you wish you could tell your younger self?

I’d tell that little girl not to worry so much about things she can’t control and to not be so hard on herself.

Who was the one who always stood with you in your ups and downs?

I believe I had many angels accompanying me during my journey, but I have a special one called Tina. She has been with me under many storms, teaching me resilience against anything life would have thrown at me.

If you could travel back in time and meet anyone, living or dead, who would they be and why?

I'd love to encounter the World War II era Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr, who invented wifi. We live in a world where women's rights are still a concern. Unfortunately, women still get paid less than men for the same jobs. I would like to say thank you to this [Hedy Lamarr] beautiful genius. Today we have wifi access, not thanks to a male scientist or engineer, but thanks to a famous Hollywood actress obsessed with tinkering. People tend to think beauty and intellect can’t go together. Can you imagine what this woman had to go through to claim her creation during those times? It’s not easy to be a strong woman today so imagine back then!
