Newcomer to the Italian acting scene Costantino Seghi recently starred in the latest movie directed by Giuseppe Piccioni called L'ombra del Giorno (Shadow of the Day). The film is a love story set during the fascist era in Italy. Costantino stars next to Riccardo Scamarcio and Benedetta Porcaroli. The young actor chose a career in acting not only out of passion but also to make a difference. In fact, Costantino told Vestal, "I'd like to make films that say something, not just entertain. The ultimate goal is to fight for social issues through acting. Acting shouldn't be just an end but also a mean." And we couldn't agree more.
Vestal Magazine __ How and when did you realize you had a passion for acting?
Costantino Seghi __ Before finishing high school, I asked myself what I wanted to dedicate my life to. I wanted to choose something meaningful, and I have a great passion for cinema and acting, so I decided to give it a shot.
VM __ Who are your influences?
CS __ Many people have influenced me over the years. Perhaps the most significant influence was seeing my friends and peers unhappy with their college or job choices. The thought of doing the “traditional job” but being unhappy or unfulfilled made me decide to pursue a career as an actor. It is a considerable risk, I still don't know if I can live off of acting, but I'll give it a try; I'm still young.
VM __ Tell us about the most challenging part of your work? And why do you think it is tough for you?
CS __ The most challenging part of my job is the waiting. We actors audition a lot in our lives, and it's nerve-wracking to wait for an answer that often doesn't even come. Why didn't I get cast? Am I not good enough? Who took the role instead? It's common to ask yourself these questions, and until you get cast, it's very stressful, but we love it anyway.
VM __ If you were asked to change something about your work, what would that be?
CS __ That screenwriters understand what they write can't necessarily be acted out as well as they think. Most importantly, there is more of a need to tell stories worth telling.
VM __ Every industry, including the entertainment industry, is full of competition; what do you do to stand out amidst competition?
CS __ Be yourself, and never try to be someone you're not just to get attention. When you speak to the true essence of a person, there is nothing more interesting.
VM __Tell us about one of the best experiences of your life?
CS __ Honestly, my life isn't that interesting.
VM __ What is the first thing you do to research and approach a role?
CS __ Character building starts when the director chooses you. It is a collective search to find nuances. You ask yourself questions that may not have answers, then you go to sleep, and the next day everything seems clearer. I try to find inspiration by listening to music, taking a walk, playing the piano, and the rest comes on its own.
VM __ Are you flexible enough to work on short notice as a stand-in?
CS __ If the project is interesting, why not.
VM __ How quickly can you assume a new role?
CS __ It depends on my sanity at the time.
VM __What are some of the difficulties of the acting business?
CS __ Handling mood swings for starters. Sometimes I feel like God; other days a wet dog.
VM __ What are you currently working on?
CS __ I am currently working on some small independent projects. Let's follow-up in the upcoming months, and I can share more details.
VM __ What would you want to say to your fans out there?
CS __ Be a fan of someone else more famous.
VM __ What, according to you, is the mantra of success?
CS __ If you are rich, it is easier.
