Carolina Sala made it on the big screen in the 2022 thriller Vetro (Crystal Girl). The 22-year-old actress delivers an exceptional performance portraying a young woman with social withdrawal disorder who spends all her time spying on her neighbor. She suspects something terrible is happening in their apartments, but the desire to investigate clashes with her inability to leave the room. The 90-minute movie takes place in a room with minimal interaction with other characters. Yet, Carolina keeps the audience glued to the screen by skillfully portraying the main character's pain, desires, and delusions. You can also catch her currently steaming on Netflix's Romance Drama TV series Fidelity, playing a college student who becomes entangled in a sexual affair with a married man.

This fall, we anticipate seeing Ms. Sala on TV in a love triangle story in Peppi Corsicato’s new film Di più non basta mai (More is never enough).

"I have had the opportunity to work with many directors with entirely different styles of filming and running the set. Some are more focused on photography, some are very specific about what they want, and others give you more freedom. One thing that I like about myself is the ability to adapt to different circumstances."

Vestal Magazine __ When did you realize you were interested in acting?

Carolina Sala __ I am not able to recall the exact moment. I have always been fascinated by everything related to acting, theatre, and cinema, but when you are a little girl from a small town, it is just a distant dream!

VM __ Do you find it challenging to play a character that isn't necessarily who you are?

CS __ I find it thrilling! Not to be me and get in the shoes of someone else. It is not always easy, but it’s captivating.

VM __ You recently starred in the Thriller Vetro. The story looks into the life of a hikikomori (a form of severe social withdrawal). Could you please tell us more about the character and how playing the role was?

CS __ In Vetro (Crystal Girl), I play a girl with no name, trapped in her head even before her room, from which she doesn’t want to go out. She has no contact with the outside world; she just talks through the door with her dad and a boy on the internet. For me, that meant that I almost didn’t have contact with other actors while shooting. It was just me: I needed to be always 100% focused and prepared.

VM __ The life of a hikikomori is an unusual theme for a movie, and it cannot be a coincidence that the movie came out after a worldwide pandemic that forced us into our homes. Why did you decide to take the role?

CS __ I fell in love with this story and love challenges (and this film was certainly one). Even if the movie does not talk literally about the pandemic, it was impossible not to think about it while we were shooting. We shot the entire film in one location. For me, it was cathartic.

VM __How important is a great director in your career?

CS __ I have had the opportunity to work with many directors with entirely different styles of filming and running the set. Some are more focused on photography, some are very specific about what they want, and others give you more freedom. One thing that I like about myself is the ability to adapt to different circumstances.

VM __ Tell us about your most challenging role. How did you prepare for it?

CS __ Besides Vetro, one of the most challenging roles I played was on stage. The role was Katherine in The Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare. In our adaptation, Katherine had a disability. I researched the condition of women and people with disabilities in the 16th century, which was enlightening. I started limping and talking more aggressively like the character for weeks to prepare for the role.

VM __ You play Sofia in the Netflix original Fidelity. The story touches on topics like infidelity, temptation, and desire. Any life lessons learned from the show?

CS __ Always try to be truthful to yourself. And then, only then, you can be honest to someone else.

VM __ How do you relax after a long day or week of work?

CS __ A good book, going to some museum or art exhibition (I am getting a degree in Art History), or going out with friends!

VM __Who are your role models in the industry or outside of it?

CS __ I don’t like role models. There are many significant figures that I appreciate, want to learn from, and esteem, but I think I have to find my way.

VM __ Who would it be if you could trade places with anyone?

CS __ Is it ok if it isn’t a real person? I’d like to be a character in Miyazaki’s films. Maybe a mix of Sophie and Calcifer in Howl’s Moving Castle.

VM __ What is your favorite thing about acting?

CS __ Living many different lives, exploring all the possibilities, and all the people I could be.
